Bumps in the Road
by Keith Haygood
"Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things" (Colossians 3:2).
Frustrated? Things aren’t going the way you had planned? Disappointed in people? Tired of fighting the battles? Wondering when you will "get yours"?
The Word of God tells us that these are all just passing things and that, while we must deal with these "bumps in the road" we will get over them. We must not dwell on life's problems, because they DO pass. Just like that proverbial "bump in the road," they pass (actually, we pass them). Sometimes they are big enough that they can somewhat change the direction that you are going. Just think about it: when you are driving your car and you hit a big bump in the road do you stop and dwell on what just nearly threw you out of your seat, or do you adjust your speed and correct your direction and move on? Obviously, you move on. (In some instances, you may need to stop and assess the damage). Just getting past that bump in the road is not your goal. Your goal is to get to your final destination, whether it be home, work, school, the store, etc. Why? Because your mind is not set on what slows you down; your mind is set on your destination.
That is the way it should be for every believer. Don't set your mind on trials that interrupt the ease of life. They all work together to make you stronger. Instead, set your mind on the goal: Life in Christ. When you set your mind on things above (Abundant Life on earth and Everlasting Life in Heaven) those "bumps in the road" become less and less of a problem. Keep your eyes on the prize and keep moving!
