WHAT IS THE GRICE
MEMORIAL MISSION
VBS OFFER?
Homer L. Grice was called to the Sunday
School Board (now LifeWay Christian
Resources) in 1924 as the first Convention-wide
promoter of Vacation Bible School work. Along
with his wife, Ethel, he developed VBS into one
of the most evangelistic ministries of Southern
Baptist churches.
Upon their death, the bulk of their estate was
distributed through the Cooperative Program of
the Southern Baptist Convention. A portion of
this gift established a trust to help churches
conduct Mission Vacation Bible Schools in areas
that would not have a VBS without the
assistance.
Interest from this trust ($2,500 in 2007) is
used to provide free VBS curriculum materials to
Southern Baptist churches and established
missions. Materials must be used to conduct
Vacation Bible Schools to reach economically
disadvantaged people groups.
A Mission VBS is designed to provide Bible
study to those who are usually not enrolled in
Sunday School and have little or no background
knowledge of the Bible.
A Mission VBS is usually planned for two
hours a day for five consecutive days, although
scheduling can be flexible to reach the most
people possible. Each session includes Bible
stories, music, prayer, Scripture memory
activities, and worship. Refreshments are often
served.
A Mission VBS may be conducted in a
variety of settings either in a building or
outdoors, at a church or in a park.
Priority for this offer will be given to
churches and missions attempting to reach
families in their own communities. The
amount of free materials provided will
depend on the need and availability of funds.
Requests from groups desiring materials for
use as part of a mission trip will only be
considered if funds are available after all other
requests have been met.
