A Word from Keith Haygood
It’s that time again! Everywhere you look you see advertisements for Back to School sales. Educators are getting geared up and students are enjoying their last few days of summer break. Very soon, moms and dads will be sending their little boys and girls to kindergarten for the first time. Others will be helping their young men and women move into a college dorm for the first time. Whatever the case, this is busy time of transition for many families. I remember how I wanted to soak up every moment of time I could spend with my children before we sent them off to college. Time is a very valuable and irreplaceable commodity.

For all of us in music ministry, it is easy to look at our fall schedules and become overwhelmed. With music ministry enrollment days, children’s and youth choir kick-offs, choir retreats and preparation for holiday music, and we can all get more than a little stressed. How you deal with that stress is very important and will affect the way you minister to your family and your church. In this fast-paced, ever-changing ministry that we carry out be sure and take time to seek God. Giving up time alone with God will not give you more time for your schedule. It will only serve to make your schedule the focal point of what you do, rather than making the glory of God your goal. And when our eyes are taken off our Savior everything else we do is in vain.

Finally, take time to enjoy family. God’s design is that our families be a priority, just below our relationship with Him. Don’t find yourself so busy doing “church work” that you fail to do the “work of the church” and serve God and your family with all that you have.

As we approach this busy time of year, take inventory of your priorities and put them all in the right place!

Recommended Reading for Worship Leaders

In Every Day Deserves a Chance, Max Lucado takes stories from the Bible that give us Jesus’ delightful formula for changing even your very worst days to blue ribbon status: Saturate your day in Jesus’ grace; entrust your day to His oversight; accept His direction. Grace. Oversight. Direction. G-O-D. It’s the perfect prescription for upgrading your day from shame-filled, anxious and purposeless to a day filled with grace and divine power. He concludes each chapter with a reflection on Scripture, and there’s a study guide for individuals and groups.
