A Word from Keith Haygood
(Quote taken from “The Word Made Flesh” a musical for Easter available at www.bgco.org )

He died that day. He carried His own cross and He died. He walked that road with the greatest of resolve and He died. I cried every step of the way. Everyone dies. And I knew that many had suffered the same type of brutality. But His death was different – almost as is if I was dying with Him. Could it be that a part of me died on that cross too? And could it be that the burden on His back and brow was greater than wood, nails and thorns? Suddenly I thought, “How can I bear not having Him here?” It felt as if I had lost my own life. Looking back, I could see that this day was inevitable. His entire life had pointed to this dark day… and He died. Why was Jesus so abused? Why was He put to death? Because He loved? Because He loved? Is love so horrible to behold that people must put it to death?

As we enter the season of Lent, let us be reminded of the high cost Christ paid for our sins. His love compelled Him to leave His perfect throne in Heaven and come to a world made imperfect by sin. His love compelled Him to live a perfect life, so that He could be the spotless “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29b). His love compelled Him to pray, “Not my will, but Thine be done (Matthew 26:42). His love compelled Him to die on the cross in my place.

Perhaps we should refocus our minds and hearts on all it cost Christ to purchase abundant, everlasting life for us and to offer it to us as a gift. If we could live in this life 1,000 years we would never thank Jesus enough for what He did in just six hours on the cross.
